The Bottleneck Has Moved
Generative AI has collapsed the cost of creation to approximately zero. Any practitioner with access to a model can produce code at a rate that would have required a team, fifteen years ago. Creation is no longer scarce. The scarce resource is comprehension: the ability to understand what was created, why it was structured the way it is, how it interacts with the rest of the system, and what will break when conditions change.
The Steward of Complexity is the practitioner who has recognized this shift and reorganized their practice around the scarce resource rather than the abundant one.
The Foundry Metaphor
A foundry does not merely produce; a foundry shapes raw material into functional form through the application of heat, pressure, and expertise. The raw material — generated code — is now abundant. The models generate it ceaselessly. The shaping — verification, naming, architectural integration, comprehension — remains exclusively human. The Steward stands at the anvil. The model feeds the furnace. The Steward decides what shape the output takes, what purpose it serves, what structural load it must bear.
Excavation Note: The word "developer" implies that the primary activity is development — the creation of new functionality. The title was accurate when the bottleneck was creation. The Steward of Complexity is the title that reflects where the bottleneck has moved.
