The forgery works because generative models are architecturally optimized to produce outputs that satisfy the user's immediate expectations. The sycophancy literature documents the structural tendency: models preferentially generate responses that align with the user's implied preferences, even when alignment requires confabulation. The user prompts. The model delivers. The delivery is fast, syntactically competent, aesthetically reassuring. The cognitive signature of this loop is indistinguishable, from the inside, from productive work.
Why the Shroud Holds
The Shroud is seductive because it satisfies every short-term incentive the practitioner faces. Speed increases. Output volume increases. The emotional experience of productivity intensifies. The practitioner's manager sees velocity. The practitioner's inner critic quiets. The only casualty is comprehension, and comprehension is invisible until the architecture exceeds the model's context window and no human remains who understands what was built.
Excavation Note: The Shroud is not deception by the machine. The machine has no intent to deceive. The Shroud is a structural effect of optimizing an interaction for user satisfaction rather than user comprehension. The distinction is the entire crisis.
