Genuine resonance requires cultivation through sustained friction: prompt refinement, error diagnosis, architectural correction. Each hallucination resolved deepens the coupling.
Vibe coding bypasses genuine coupling by generating asymmetric resonance: a structural illusion where the statistical output of the machine mimics the structural intent of the human. The surface appears aligned. The substrate is hollow.
The Asymmetry of Apparent Competence
An engineer builds causal architectures; the model calculates token proximity. It pattern-matches expert code until the architecture requires reasoning outside sequential prediction. At that threshold, it hallucinates confident syntax. The practitioner, calibrated to the model's routine successes, is blind to its rare but devastating errors.
This asymmetry builds inevitable systemic failure into the architecture. Because the model usually works, the human relaxes verification. Because verification relaxes, errors compound until the system absorbs enough latent failure to shatter. The operational model of the AI—as a bounded container of reliable expertise—is a fundamental fiction.
Trust Calibration Failure
Asymmetric resonance takes hold when human trust exceeds machine comprehension. The practitioner interfaces with apparent competence while ignoring deep structural unreliability. This is not a failure of the AI. It is a failure of the human's model of the AI. The machine performs exactly as designed: it predicts statistically likely sequences. The human assigns structural intent to statistical output. The gap between these two realities is the asymmetry.
Ignoring the asymmetry guarantees the fracture. The architecture shatters not because the AI failed, but because the practitioner's understanding of the AI was never correct.
Relation to the Mind-Meld Tax
The Mind-Meld Tax exists precisely to close this asymmetry. Verification labor, context management, architectural stewardship, and hallucination remediation are the structural costs of maintaining genuine resonance. Bypassing the tax does not eliminate the asymmetry; it merely defers the moment when the illusion shatters against the reality of asymmetric competence.
